Korean and Second World War Veterans Share their Stories with The Memory Project
Dartmouth – September 27 - Local Second World War and Korean War veterans gathered today to participate in a nation-wide oral history project. The Memory Project archive is travelling across Canada to preserve a legacy of Canadian service and sacrifice. Interviews will continue tomorrow, September 28 at the Best Western in Bridgewater.
With more than 2,500 Second World War veteran testimonials recorded to date, The Memory Project Archive recently received new funding to collect and preserve the experiences of Canada’s Korean War veterans so that may never be forgotten.
“We are proud to be in Nova Scotia to capture the experiences of veterans from this region,” said, Jill Paterson, Project Manager. “We are particularly thrilled to be able to collect not only the stories of only Second World War veterans, but also those of the so-called “Forgotten War”, whose experiences we are working to bring forward in Canadian consciousness.”
An initiative of The Historica-Dominion Institute, The Memory Project: Stories of the Second World War and Korean War Archive is creating an unprecedented record of Canada’s participation in the Second World War and Korean War as seen through the eyes of thousands of men and women who were there. It is providing every living veteran with the opportunity to preserve their memories through recorded interviews and digitized memorabilia. Their stories are available, in both official languages, at www.thememoryproject.com.
The Memory Project Archive is made possible by a contribution from the Government of Canada through the Celebrations and Commemorations Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
The Historica-Dominion Institute is the largest independent organization dedicated to history and citizenship in Canada. Its mandate is to build active and informed citizens through a greater knowledge and appreciation of the history, heritage and stories of Canada. Visit www.historica-dominion.ca.
