Lieutenant-Commander Victoria DeVita OSM–EXP, CD1 LCdr Victoria DeVita joined the Naval Reserves at HMCS Queen in Regina, Saskatchewan following in her Grandfather’s military past while attending the University of Regina. She initially trained at CFB Chilliwack BC and completed her MARS officer training at NOTC Venture in Esquimalt, BC whilst concurrently working on a B.A. Hon. Degree in Linguistics at York University in Toronto, ON. She earned her Bridge Watch Keeping Qualification in 1998 in HMCS SHAWINIGAN and obtained her MWV Command Qualification in 2010. From spring of 1998 through to summer of 2009, LCdr DeVita worked full time in seagoing positions in HMC Ships SHAWINIGAN and SUMMERSIDE, including being a part of SUMMERSIDES’s commissioning crew as the Deck Officer and filled various full time positions ashore at the Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare Centre and Fifth Maritime Operations Group. In July 2009, LCdr DeVita was appointed as Executive Officer of HMCS SHAWINIGAN and, later, HMCS GLACE BAY until 30 Aug 2011. LCdr DeVita returned to the Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare Centre as the Mine Warfare Operational Testing and Evaluation Officer upon completion of her Executive Officer tours. From July 2013-Jul 2015, LCdr DeVita was honoured to be appointed as the Commanding Officer of HMCS GLACE BAY. This would mark the fourth time a women was appointed in Command of an RCN Ship and the first time in which both the CO and XO were women at the same time. Upon completion of her Command Tour, she was posted to Ottawa to work as the Naval Reserve Occupation Manager prior to taking a component transfer to the Regular Force in 2017. She is currently posted in Halifax to stand up the new Targeting Cell at MARLANT HQ. LCdr DeVita is a graduate of the Joint Command and Staff Program at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto. She has participated in several multinational exercises such as MARCOT ’98 in Newfoundland, PANAMEX ’04 in Panama City, Panama, numerous DYNAMIC MOVE Exercises in Oostende, Belgium, OP CARIBBE, and EX TRADE WINDS in St. Kitts and Nevis and Belize City, Belize. She was also deployed as a member of Standing NATO MCM Group One (SNMCMG1) in the fall of 2009. She was awarded a Command Commendation for her work in a major project to transfer Naval Reservists into the Regular Force. Her deployments have taken her to as far north as the Arctic Circle and as far south as the Caribbean Sea. LCdr DeVita enjoys speaking on her experiences as a women in the CAF, as a mother and wife to a service spouse, and on service in the Navy.
