Born in St. John’s NL, John joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1973 as an Administrative Clerk and quickly rose through the ranks being promoted to Master Warrant Officer in 1990.  In 1992, he was commissioned from the ranks as a Personnel Administration Officer in the rank of Captain.  He was subsequently promoted to Major in 2004.  He has completed four operational tours:  Ismailia Egypt with 73 Canadian Service Battalion, the Adjutant of the Canadian Contingent in the Golan Heights, the Canadian Contingent G1 in Bosnia-Herzegovina as a part of SFOR & the Chief of Staff, Theatre Support Element for Task Force Afghanistan.  After 34 years of service, he took his release from the CAF in 2007 to take employment as the Garrison Wainwright Senior Manager, Personnel Support Programs, a division of the Canadian Forces Morale & Welfare Services; where he worked for an additional 11 years.  He retired in 2018.

John has been a Legion member for many years highlighted by four years as the President of Worthington Branch No. 29 in Wainwright, two years as District 3 Commander, one year as Alberta-Northwest Territories Command Vice-President and two years as its 1st Vice-President.  He was elected to his current position of President, Alberta-Northwest Territories Command at the May 2019 Provincial Convention in Drumheller.

Comrade John Mahon is the recipient of the Canadian Forces Decoration (2nd Clasp), United Nations Emergency Force II medal, United Nations Disengagement Observer Force Medal, the Special Service Medal (NATO), the NATO Stabilization Force Medal, the General Service Medal (Afghanistan) and the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal.
