Remembrance, Conflict in Afghanistan,
I joined the military late in life (at age 32) and found myself deployed on Canada's first NATO led Afghanistan tour in 2003 only a year after joining. It was the first of 3 tours I ended up doing in Afghanistan and my time there totaled close to 2 years (Thanks to a long tour on my second deployment). I have been lucky enough to have had varied experiences overseas and most of my time has been exiting and always lessons being learned. My final tour was as part of Canada's Special Forces, deploying as a member of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment. I have, in my time in the service, been awarded the General Campaign Star (Afg) with 2 Bars, The Canadian Decoration, And the Sacrifice Medal (for being wounded in combat operations in 2011). I have conducted numerous foot patrols through many parts of Afghanistan, as well, I have been a member of a LAV III team. My wife is also a soldier and Afghan Vet so I have also experienced the other side of deployment when I was at home worrying daily about her. I am happy to discuss anything the students would like to hear, from the first day I arrived overseas in 2003 up to being wounded in 2011.
