The first person that I would like to talk about is my father's eldest brother. He was an engineer – a graduate of university. He signed up in September of 1914. He was in England by early February, and he was in the front lines, somewhere on the continent. Deployed quite rapidly, from the concept of being a university student to being on the front lines in less than six months. The duration of his time during the war… I don't have an awful lot. The only real memory of it was that he lost an eye, which didn't invalid him out of the Army for quite some time. He went on to become a successful engineer, and as a matter of fact went on to become the Chief Engineer for Ontario Hydro.
