An initiative of Historica Canada, The Memory Project is a volunteer speakers bureau that arranges for veterans and Canadian Forces members to share their stories of military service at school and community events across the country.
What are you signing up for?
By becoming a volunteer speaker for The Memory Project, you agree to visit or video conference with groups (usually schools or community groups) to share your story of service.
Memory Project volunteer speakers enrich the lives of Canadians by sharing their stories of military service. Since 2001, our speakers have reached 3 million Canadians. Memory Project speakers are the backbone of the program. Without our speakers, we could not do what we do.
Educate Canadians by sharing your personal story of service (and specific themes/topics within your personal boundaries, as requested by groups, to be agreed upon before visits);
Represent The Memory Project and Historica Canada while conducting visits.
Serving or have served in the military, in any capacity;
Interest in sharing your story with Canadians;
Ability to pass vulnerable sector search, if required.
Memory Project staff will support speakers by facilitating visits, providing resources, and answering questions. Memory Project staff will be available via email or phone during regular business hours (EST).
Memory Project volunteers are expected to adhere to the Volunteer Code of Conduct.
While representing The Memory Project on arranged visits, speakers will talk about their personal service experience and share their own stories (and specific themes/topics, if applicable and agreed upon beforehand). Speakers will not use speaking engagements as an opportunity for personal promotion, including but not limited to entrepreneurship or Canadian Armed Forces recruitment.
Speakers determine the duration of their commitment to The Memory Project. Memory Project speakers are not expected to accept every visit request proposed to them; speakers can accept or decline visits based on personal preference (e.g., audience age and size, proximity) and availability.
While the majority of Memory Project visits requests occur in the fall, the speakers bureau operates year-round and requests are received and fulfilled on an ongoing basis.
